Can climate shape flight activity patterns of Plebeia remota Hymenoptera, Apidae)? Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Hilário,Sergio D.; Ribeiro,Márcia de F.; Imperatriz-Fonseca,Vera L..
Flight activity of foragers of four colonies of Plebeia remota (Holmberg, 1903) was registered from December 1998 to December 1999, using an automated system (photocells and PLC system). The colonies originated from two different regions: Cunha, state of São Paulo, and Prudentópolis, state of Paraná, Brazil. Flight activity was influenced by different climatic factors in each season. In the summer, the intensity of the correlations between flight activity and climatic factors was smaller than in the other seasons. During the autumn and winter, solar radiation was the factor that most influenced flight activity, while in the spring, this activity was influenced mainly by temperature. Except in the summer, the various climatic factors similarly influenced...

Canary Island Tomato Exports: A Structural Analysis of Seasonality AgEcon
Rodriguez, Gloria Martin; Hernandez, Jose Juan Caceres.
The European tomato market is characterised by a constant process of dynamic adjustment toward the equilibrium. Furthermore, Canary tomato exports cause a high seasonal impact on market prices in the winter period. In these circumstances, an adequate distribution of shipments throughout the campaign could contribute to maximize producers' profits. The goal of this paper is to analyse the seasonal pattern of Canary tomato exports to Europe throughout the first fourteen campaigns following Spanish integration into the European Union. These export levels show some degree of instability, clearly related to the changes in the European Union trade rules, and there is a long period, the summer, without exports. Moreover, we have opted by using weekly data. These...

CHANGING SEASONAL PATTERNS IN THE POULTRY MARKET AgEcon
Ji, Wen.
The role of seasonality in modeling agricultural markets is well recognized. However, traditional approaches to account for seasonality assume that seasonal pattern is constant, even though some evidence of changing seasonal pattern exists in the literature. This paper seeks to explore the impact of incorporating changing seasonal pattern into poultry market modeling. Keywords: seasonality, trigonometric variable, seasonal frequency.

Characterization saprobic fungi on leaf litter of two species of trees in the Atlantic Forest, Brazil BJM
Costa,Loise Araujo; Gusmão,Luís Fernando Pascholati.
Abstract We investigated the composition and structure of fungal communities associated with leaf litter generated by Clusia nemorosa and Vismia guianensis that belong to phylogenetically-related botanical families and exist together in a remnant of the Atlantic Forest in Bahia, Brazil. Samplings were conducted during wet (June 2011) and dry (January 2013) seasons in Serra da Jibóia. The fungi were isolated using particle filtration and the 1,832 isolates represented 92 taxa. The wet season yielded the largest number of isolates (1,141) and taxa (76) compared with the dry season (641 isolates and 37 taxa). The richness and diversity of fungal species associated with C. nemorosa (64 taxa, Simpson=0.95)were higher compared with those of V.guianensis (59...

Coastal phytoplankton community dynamics and coexistence driven by intragroup density-dependence, light and hydrodynamics ArchiMer
Barraquand, F.; Picoche, C.; Maurer, Daniele; Carassou, L.; Auby, Isabelle.
Phytoplanktonic communities maintain a high diversity in a seemingly homogeneous environment, competing for the same set of resources. Many theories have been proposed to explain this coexistence despite likely competition, such as contrasted responses to temporal environmental variation. However, theory has developed at a faster pace than empirical evaluation using field data, which requires inferring drivers of community dynamics from observational time series. Here, we combine autoregressive models with a data set spanning more than 20 years of phytoplankton counts every two weeks, together with nutrients and physical variables. By comparing models dominated by nutrients or physical variables (hydrodynamics and climate), we first explore which abiotic...

Coastal upwelling in the eastern Gulf of California ArchiMer
Lluch-cota, Salvador Emilio.
Understanding and quantifying upwelling is of great importance for marine resource management. Direct measurement of this process is extremely difficult and observed time-series do not exist. However, proxies are commonly derived from different data; most commonly wind-derived. A local wind-derived coastal upwelling index (CUI) is reported for the period 1970-1996 and is considered representative for the eastern central Gulf of California, an important fishing area where no proxies exist. The index is well related to pigment concentration distribution, surface water temperature, and population dynamics of important fish resources over the seasonal time-scale. There is a biological response to ENSO activity not reflected by this index, indicating that...

Components of Grain Futures Price Volatility AgEcon
Karali, Berna; Thurman, Walter N..
We analyze the determinants of daily futures price volatility in corn, soybeans, wheat, and oats markets from 1986 to 2007. Combining the information from simultaneously traded contracts, a generalized least squares method is implemented that allows us to clearly distinguish among time-to-delivery effects, seasonality, calendar trend, and volatility persistence. We find strong evidence of time-to-delivery (Samuelson) effects and systematic seasonal components with volatility increasing prior to harvest times— an indirect confirmation of the theory of storage.

Composition and seasonal variation of the ichthyofauna from upper Rio Paraguaçu (Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil) BABT
Santos,Alexandre Clistenes de Alcântara; Caramaschi,Érica Pellegrini.
The aim of this work was to characterize the composition of the ichthyofauna of the upper course of the Rio Paraguaçu. Two excursions were carried out, one in the dry season, and the other in the rainy season, with 36 localities sampled. A total of 63 species were collected. Multivariate analyses indicated that abiotic variables such as the channel order and altitude were the main influences on the number of species present. The number of species in each excursion was equivalent in the two seasons, suggesting that seasonal changes have little influence on the ichthyofauna of this area.

Compositional change in fish assemblages along the Andean piedmont - Llanos floodplain gradient of the río Portuguesa, Venezuela Neotropical Ichthyology
Hoeinghaus,David J.; Winemiller,Kirk O.; Taphorn,Donald C..
The Llanos is an extensive area of savannas and floodplains in central and western Venezuela that encompasses a gradual elevation gradient from the río Orinoco to the foothills of the Andean piedmont. The río Portuguesa is one of the major rivers in this region that until recently had escaped major anthropogenic impacts and still maintains substantial seasonal fish migrations. However, little work has been conducted on fish ecology in this river. The present study analyzes museum collections sampled at 28 locations along the longitudinal gradient of the río Portuguesa to assess similarity of species composition from the foothills of the Andean piedmont to the lowland llanos floodplain. The standardized samples used in this analysis contained greater than...

ArchiMer
Leguerrier, Dephine.
In order to better understand the functioning of the Brouage intertidal mudflat (Marennes- Oléron Basin, France), its carbon-based trophic web has been modelled and analyzed. The foodweb building is based on the 4 step method of Inverse Analysis: 1) conceive an a priori model as the graph of compartments (nodes) between which exist fluxes of material (vertices). These vertices are the unknowns for the problem; 2) gather all the existing knowledge about the ecosystem and translate it into linear equations and inequalities involving the fluxes; 3) complete this set of data by common knowledge on the behaviour of the compartments and translate it into inequalities, 4) solve the obtained linear system under the parsimony principle to find a unique solution...

Contribution of benthic microalgae to the temporal variation in phytoplankton assemblages in a macrotidal system ArchiMer
Hernandez Farinas, Tania; Ribeiro, Lourenco; Soudant, Dominique; Belin, Catherine; Bacher, Cedric; Lampert, Luis; Barille, Laurent.
Suspended marine benthic microalgae in the water column reflect the close relationship between the benthic and pelagic components of coastal ecosystems. In this study, a 12-year phytoplankton time-series was used to investigate the contribution of benthic microalgae to the pelagic system at a site along the French-Atlantic coast. Furthermore, all taxa identified were allocated into different growth forms in order to study their seasonal patterns. The highest contribution of benthic microalgae was observed during the winter period, reaching up to 60% of the carbon biomass in the water column. The haptobenthic growth form showed the highest contribution in terms of biomass, dominant in the fall-winter period when the turbidity and the river flow were high....
